Former Steelworker Starts Business to Promote Mental Wellbeing

Martyn Wagstaff, a former steelworker from Port Talbot, has launched Springfield Advisory, a business focused on enhancing mental wellbeing in the workplace. After two years at the Port Talbot steelworks and witnessing challenges faced by employees, Martyn decided to take action. He recognized that many workers struggled with mental health issues but were reluctant to seek help due to stigma and fear of appearing weak.

While at the steelworks, Martyn conducted webinars and awareness seminars, reaching approximately 100 employees. He implemented walking groups and utilized techniques learned during his prior experience with youth groups, where he earned various qualifications in first aid, mental health, addiction, and wellbeing.

With a £11,500 Fast Track loan from Tata Steel’s subsidiary, UKSE, Martyn aims to extend his support to businesses and organizations in Neath, Port Talbot, and beyond. This funding is part of UKSE’s Support Programme for Wales, which has contributed £3 million to the Welsh economy since launching last year, creating around 400 jobs across 81 businesses.

Martyn emphasizes the importance of employers taking responsibility for the mental health of their workforce. Recent changes by the Health and Safety Executive require employers to provide mental health support, which he believes will lead to a more productive workforce and reduced absenteeism.

Michelle Noble, Regional Executive with UKSE, expressed her enthusiasm for supporting Springfield Advisory. She noted the increasing recognition of mental wellbeing’s importance in both professional and community settings, stating that Martyn possesses the skills and experience to facilitate meaningful change.

By launching Springfield Advisory, Martyn Wagstaff aims to create an environment where individuals feel empowered to address their mental health challenges openly and seek the support they need.
