The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) at West Virginia University (WVU) is hosting Mental Health First Aid training sessions, designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary to assist others facing mental health or substance use crises. This training is similar to traditional First Aid and CPR but focuses on mental health support.
Participants in the training will learn to identify risk factors and warning signs associated with mental health issues and substance use disorders. They will also receive practical strategies for intervening in both crisis and non-crisis situations, as well as guidance on where to seek further support.
The training is structured into two parts: a two-hour self-guided online module that must be completed before attending the instructor-led session, and a full-day virtual session. The instructor-led sessions are scheduled for May 6 and June 11, running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
To achieve certification, attendees must finish the online component, participate in the live session, and complete a brief post-training requirement. The certification will remain valid for three years.
This training is available to all community members for a fee of $40 per participant. Current WVU students and employees can register at a discounted rate of $25. WVU employees are encouraged to check with their supervisors for potential sponsorship opportunities.
Additionally, participants may earn 7.5 continuing education hours, applicable for West Virginia licensed social workers, for an extra fee of $40.
