Higher education institutions (HEIs) are adopting new guidelines aimed at improving the emotional and mental wellbeing of students. These guidelines emphasize the need for an inclusive and supportive environment, particularly for those from marginalized or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

To achieve this, HEIs must implement protective mechanisms that foster positive interactions among students, faculty, and administration. Initiatives such as awareness campaigns and sensitization programs will be integrated into academic activities. Courses and seminars will focus on effective communication techniques, including verbal, non-verbal, and gestural methods.

Student welfare services are expected to collaborate with various centers within institutions, like Student Service Centres (SSC) and Equal Opportunity Centres (EOC). This collaboration will ensure comprehensive support for students, addressing their diverse needs.

Faculty training is also a key component of the new framework. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 encourages mental health services as an essential part of higher education. Faculty members will have opportunities to participate in refresher courses on counseling, mental health, and mentoring skills. Training will cover various dimensions, including physical, cognitive, emotional, and social mentoring.

Orientation programs for new students will include detailed explanations of academic and non-academic expectations. These sessions will involve guardians and emphasize the available resources. Additionally, psychometric evaluations will help identify students needing further support, ensuring a positive and friendly approach to mental health assessments.

Counseling will be available throughout students’ academic programs, with opportunities for interaction with peers, faculty, and professional counselors, including psychologists. Virtual counseling options will maintain anonymity for students who prefer privacy.

Early detection of emotional distress is crucial. Institutions will monitor indicators such as academic performance, attendance, and social interactions to identify students needing immediate support.

To combat the rising concern of student suicides, the government has established a Mental Health Policy and a Mental Healthcare Act. These provide a framework for suicide prevention strategies in HEIs. Institutions are encouraged to create customized standard operating procedures (SoPs) based on national guidelines, addressing risk factors and protective measures.

A buddy and mentor system will connect students with upperclassmen and faculty mentors, fostering a support network that promotes life skills and psychological wellbeing. Collaborations with premier psychiatric institutions will ensure access to mental health professionals for specialized sessions and interventions.

HEIs must also encourage closer interactions between faculty and students, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to prevent feelings of isolation. Programs like Mentor-Buddy System, Academic Mentoring, and Personality Development Sessions will facilitate this engagement.

Team-based academic activities, such as group projects and discussions, will be encouraged to build collaboration and improve confidence among students.

To address grievances effectively, a three-tiered system will be established, allowing for timely resolution of student issues. Grievances will be handled within ten days at the first two tiers, with a third-party option available for further review.

Physical fitness and nutrition play vital roles in mental health. Institutions are encouraged to integrate fitness programs, yoga classes, and healthy eating options into the curriculum. Regular fitness activities are linked to improved psychological health, and students will be educated on the benefits of a balanced diet, with nutrition experts advising on dietary choices.

Lastly, an independent third-party evaluation will assess the effectiveness of mental health initiatives within institutions. This evaluation will ensure that HEIs maintain a supportive environment for student wellbeing. Institutional leaders will be personally involved in monitoring progress and reviewing policies related to mental health services and suicide prevention.

These initiatives represent a comprehensive approach to enhancing the mental health landscape in higher education, ensuring that students receive the support they need to thrive academically and personally.
