Youth Recovery Connections, a nonprofit organization based in Hollister, California, has been awarded $1.2 million as part of California’s $3.3 billion initiative aimed at tackling mental health issues and homelessness. This funding will enable the organization to significantly broaden its support services for young individuals facing substance abuse challenges.
Michael Salinas, the executive director of Youth Recovery Connections, emphasized the importance of the funding, stating it will allow the organization to deliver both substance abuse treatment and mental health care to an underserved youth population. Currently, they serve around 200 clients, but with this new funding, they anticipate an increase in capacity to serve approximately 9,000 youths.
In San Benito County, there is a notable shortage of providers offering these critical services. Salinas expressed hope that the expanded services will complement existing support.
Monica Hernandez, a staff member at Youth Recovery Connections, works closely with both parents and young people and has observed the pressing need for support. Many parents underestimate the challenges their children face, believing they can manage on their own. Hernandez highlighted the necessity of parental involvement, stating, “We give parents tools to support and guide their youth.”
The funding will facilitate essential programs, including substance abuse education, emotional support, and communication skill development. Hernandez has seen positive changes in families after just a few sessions, noting that collaboration between parents and youths leads to better outcomes.
In total, the initiative has allocated $131 million to seven organizations across the Central Coast, marking a concerted effort to enhance mental health services in the region.
