Local authors publish book to challenge ADHD stereotypes

A new children’s book aims to reshape perceptions of ADHD, a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in focusing and hyperactivity. Authored by Dani Vee and her partner James Layton, “My SUPERCHARGED ADHD Brain” seeks to confront the negative stereotypes often associated with ADHD.

Both authors were diagnosed with ADHD relatively late, within the past two years. Reflecting on their experiences, Vee noted, “We often heard negative labels like ‘You’re fickle, you’re vague, you’re too much, you’re too loud.’ Instead of dwelling on these criticisms, we decided to celebrate the traits that come with ADHD.”

The inspiration for the book stemmed from Vee’s desire to create a resource for children who might feel out of place because of their ADHD. “I wish I had that book when I was growing up because I always felt like I didn’t quite fit in. It’s about embracing a busy brain and recognizing the strengths that come with it, like being a good friend and enjoying new experiences,” she explained.

While the book highlights the positive aspects of ADHD, it also acknowledges the challenges faced by those with the condition. Vee mentioned that the main character in the story forgets her school project, runs late, and needs quiet time. “We’re not ignoring the difficulties, but we want to flip the narrative. We’ve all heard the negative aspects repeatedly, so it was important for us to present a more balanced view,” she said.

Vee’s motivation was also personal; she wanted to create a narrative that her daughter could relate to. “I hope kids can understand that those traits they hear about aren’t flaws, they’re just part of how their brains work. If someone tells them they’re too loud or too much, I want them to respond, ‘That’s my awesome brain.'”

Since its release, the book has gained traction, with around 5,000 copies sold even before hitting store shelves on June 4. The positive reception reflects a growing interest in literature that validates and celebrates neurodiversity, offering both children and parents a new perspective on ADHD.
