A recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition reveals a notable correlation between dietary selenium intake and depression rates among individuals with and without a history of stroke. Conducted using data from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the research involved 15,018 participants.

The study indicates that individuals without a stroke history show a non-linear relationship between selenium intake and depression prevalence, with a threshold identified at approximately 128.4 micrograms per day. Below this level, the risk of depression appears to increase. Conversely, no clear association was found between selenium intake and depression among participants who had experienced a stroke.

Researchers utilized logistic regression and interaction effect analysis to assess the data. They discovered that selenium intake’s impact on depression varies significantly between the two groups. For those without stroke, higher selenium consumption correlated with lower depression rates, while stroke survivors did not exhibit the same pattern.

The findings suggest that dietary selenium may play a role in mental health, particularly in non-stroke individuals. However, the authors caution that cross-sectional studies cannot establish causal relationships, indicating that further research is needed to confirm these results and explore the mechanisms involved.

Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of diet in mental health, particularly in relation to selenium, which may serve as a dietary factor influencing depression risk in certain populations.
