Experts discuss perinatal mood and anxiety disorders at Virtua Health

In a recent Stay Well Health Chat, psychotherapist Emilie Sheridan, LCSW, PMH-C, discussed the serious topic of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) with hosts Nicole Michalik and Marisa Magnatta. Sheridan, who specializes in treatment for pregnant and postpartum patients at Virtua Health, explained that PMADs encompass a range of mental health challenges that can affect individuals from conception through the first year after giving birth.

While many people recognize postpartum depression, PMADs also include anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and even psychosis. Sheridan emphasized that symptoms of PMADs can go beyond the commonly known “baby blues,” which typically occur within the first few days after childbirth and resolve on their own.

“Many people are unaware that PMADs can manifest at any point during the perinatal period, not just after delivery,” Sheridan noted. She detailed that common symptoms of PMADs include persistent sadness, heightened anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and changes in sleep and appetite. These symptoms can disrupt daily functioning, making it essential for individuals to seek help when they notice persistent changes in their mental state.

During the discussion, Sheridan outlined key factors that may increase the risk of developing PMADs. These can include personal or family history of mental health conditions, lack of support, and stressful life events during pregnancy or after giving birth. Understanding these risk factors can help in identifying those who may need targeted support and treatment.

The conversation aimed to demystify PMADs, encouraging individuals to reach out for professional help when necessary. Sheridan advised that seeking assistance sooner rather than later can lead to more effective treatment outcomes. Many effective treatments are available, including therapy and medication, which can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall well-being.

The chat served as an important reminder of the need for awareness and proactive support for mental health during the perinatal period. By recognizing the signs of PMADs and understanding the available resources, individuals can take important steps toward recovery and maintaining their mental health during this critical time.
