Internet Therapy Reduces Stress for Cancer Caregivers

A recent scoping review published in JMIR Cancer examines the effects of Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) on caregivers of cancer patients. Caregivers often experience high levels of emotional and physical distress due to their responsibilities, which can lead to anxiety, depression, and a decline in their quality of life. The review highlights that ICBT serves as an effective alternative to traditional methods, which can be limited by geographical and time constraints.

The study analyzed 12 relevant articles, finding that ICBT interventions typically include components such as cognitive education, emotional coping strategies, and behavioral activation. Most interventions lasted between 6 to 8 weeks and were delivered through platforms like WeChat and various mobile applications.

Key findings from the review indicate that ICBT effectively reduces negative emotions and alleviates stress among caregivers. Specifically, it showed a moderate effect on decreasing anxiety and depression levels. Despite this, improvements in overall quality of life were not statistically significant, suggesting the need for extended follow-up studies.

The review also noted that while participants found the programs feasible and acceptable, recruitment challenges existed, with some studies reporting rates below 50%. Attrition rates varied from 3% to 16%, indicating a need to keep participants engaged throughout the intervention.

Research shows that caregivers often suppress their own needs while focusing on the patient, leading to emotional strain. ICBT addresses this by providing caregivers with a flexible platform to access information and support. Techniques such as relaxation training and emotional guidance are integrated into the therapy to help reduce stress and improve caregivers’ coping abilities.

The review calls for the development of tailored ICBT programs that consider cultural contexts, particularly in China, where the study was conducted. By adapting intervention strategies to meet local needs, the effectiveness and acceptance of ICBT for caregivers could be significantly improved.

This research emphasizes the importance of supporting caregivers, who play a vital role in the healthcare system. As the incidence of cancer continues to rise globally, addressing the mental health needs of caregivers becomes increasingly critical to ensure they can provide effective support to their loved ones.
