A recent study conducted in Qatar examined the self-esteem, self-compassion, and psychological resilience of staff nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research, led by George Vellaramcheril Joy and colleagues, involved 300 nurses from 14 health facilities, collected through an online survey in January 2022, amid the pandemic’s third wave.

The survey utilized well-established measurement tools, including the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form, to assess the mental health metrics of participating nurses. Results indicated that participants reported high levels of resilience, self-esteem, and self-compassion. Specifically, resilience scores were positively correlated with both self-esteem and self-compassion, suggesting that nurses who felt more self-compassionate and had higher self-esteem also demonstrated greater psychological resilience.

Furthermore, the study found that educational attainment among nurses significantly contributed to their self-esteem and resilience levels. This emphasizes the importance of education in fostering mental health among nursing professionals during crisis situations. The findings highlight the capacity of nurses to maintain positive mental health indicators despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, illustrating their strength and adaptability in a demanding environment.

This research offers valuable data on the psychological well-being of healthcare workers during the pandemic, contributing to ongoing discussions about supporting mental health in the nursing profession. The study has been published in the Nursing Open journal, accessible under a Creative Commons license, with open access funding provided by the Qatar National Library.
