Orygen-Studie identifiziert Gehirnveränderungen, die einer Depression vorausgehen

A groundbreaking study by Orygen researchers in Australia has discovered that certain changes in brain structure during adolescence may predict the onset of depression. Over a period of 15 years, researchers tracked the brain development of more than 160 Melbourne students, monitoring their mental health from ages 12 to 27.

The study revealed that disturbances in the growth of key brain regions during teenage years are linked to a higher likelihood of developing depressive disorders later in life. This research provides new evidence that specific age-related changes in the brain occur before the clinical diagnosis of depression, suggesting these alterations could serve as indicators of future mental health issues.

Professor Sarah Whittle, the lead author of the study and head of neurodevelopmental research at Orygen, emphasized the importance of their findings. Using MRI technology, the research team observed an increase in the size of the amygdala, a brain region involved in emotional regulation, as well as thickening in the temporal lobe, occipital lobe, and insula, which is associated with basic emotions such as happiness and anger.

The implications of this study are significant. By understanding what triggers these brain changes—whether genetic factors or adverse childhood experiences—researchers aim to develop methods for early detection and intervention. Early treatment for mental health issues is critical, as it can lead to better outcomes for affected individuals.

Depression remains the leading cause of disease burden among young people globally. The findings from this study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, highlight the necessity of improving understanding of how and why these conditions develop, particularly through the lens of brain development. By identifying at-risk individuals before symptoms manifest, it is possible to implement preventive measures and appropriate support.
