Experts Warn Political Stress Heightens Mental Health Risks

Political anxiety is becoming a prevalent issue, with experts highlighting its growing impact on mental health. Amanda Friesen, a political science professor and Canada Research Chair in political psychology at the University of Western Ontario, notes that discussions around political distress are increasingly common. As political events unfold, individuals often experience heightened anxiety, which can exacerbate existing mental health challenges.

The Catalyst Conversations on Mental Health Society recently brought together experts to discuss the effects of political stress on mental health. They emphasized the need for a better understanding of how political events influence emotional well-being. With rising political tensions and polarized views, many individuals report feeling overwhelmed and anxious about the future.

In May 2025, the Mental Health Commission of Canada will spotlight these concerns during Mental Health Week. This year’s theme, “Unmasking,” aims to encourage individuals living with mental health challenges to openly express their experiences without fear of stigma.

Additionally, advocates stress the importance of listening to those affected by mental health issues. Engaging individuals with lived experiences can drive policy changes and foster a culture of awareness. The Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Youth Advisory Council, co-chaired by Em Alexander and Colbi Mike, serves as a platform for young people to share their insights and influence mental health policies.

Moreover, discussions around terminology are crucial. Advocates recommend using language that reflects individuals’ lived experiences, such as differentiating between “unhoused” and “homeless,” to promote understanding and reduce stigma.

As the field of electronic mental health grows, Canada has introduced its first E-Mental Health Strategy. This framework offers practical tools and recommendations for integrating digital solutions into mental health care. However, experts caution that there are no one-size-fits-all solutions, and tailoring approaches to individual needs remains essential.

Overall, as political anxiety becomes more recognized, it is imperative to address its effects on mental health actively. Support systems and advocacy efforts are vital in helping individuals cope with political stress and improving overall mental well-being.
