On May 14, the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) Legislative Policy Panel convened at the MHA Capital Advocacy Center to formulate recommendations for the MHA Board of Trustees regarding legislative measures that affect hospitals across Michigan.
During the meeting, MHA Capitol Advocacy Center staff presented updates on healthcare activities at both federal and state levels. Adam Carlson, senior vice president of advocacy, reported on various federal issues, including funding allocations, tariffs, and the 340B drug pricing program, which aims to help hospitals serving low-income patients.
John Karasinski, senior director of communications, highlighted the MHA’s efforts to promote the importance of Medicaid in Michigan. He discussed the association’s Medicaid communication strategies and outlined initiatives related to media engagement, advocacy campaigns, and recent public polling conducted by the Protect MI Care Coalition.
The panel also reviewed matters concerning nurse practitioner scope of practice legislation and insurance coverage for annual mental health exams. These discussions focused on ensuring that mental health services are accessible and adequately covered under insurance plans.
One significant outcome from the meeting was the panel’s unanimous recommendation for the MHA to oppose any proposed site-neutral payment policies in Michigan. These policies could impact funding for hospitals and potentially reduce the quality of care provided to patients.
