UPEI ADHD Program Transfers to Health PEI to Expand Services

The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) has transitioned its provincial ADHD program to Health PEI, effective April 1, 2025. This change aims to ensure continued support for Islanders diagnosed with ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting approximately 5 to 7 percent of adults. Marilyn Barrett, Director of Distributed Medical Education and Family Medicine and former director of the UPEI ADHD program, emphasized the importance of this transition for individuals seeking assistance.

Launched on July 3, 2022, the UPEI ADHD program received an initial grant of $1,000,000 from the Government of Prince Edward Island. This funding facilitated the establishment of a comprehensive support system for individuals aged 16 and older with ADHD. Due to its success, the provincial government provided an additional $1,500,000 grant in 2023, further enhancing the program’s capabilities.

The UPEI ADHD program has been instrumental in delivering tailored services that assist individuals in managing their ADHD symptoms and achieving their personal goals. As part of the transition, the program will remain located at the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre at UPEI until it moves to the new UPEI Faculty of Medicine and Interprofessional Education facility planned for 2025–26.

The contact number for the program remains the same (902-620-5296), but the email address has changed to provincialadhdprogram@ihis.org. Additional information is available on the Health PEI website. Dr. David Wong, a retired physician involved with the program, and Barrett expressed pride in the team’s work and dedication to improving the lives of individuals with ADHD in Prince Edward Island. They highlighted the privilege of serving this community and the ongoing commitment to providing quality care under the new operational framework.
