General practitioners (GPs) in New South Wales will soon gain the authority to diagnose and treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in both children and adults. This change is part of a new initiative aimed at improving access to mental health services in the region. GPs can now apply for specialized training that will equip them with the necessary skills to recognize and manage ADHD effectively.
Currently, many individuals with ADHD face long wait times to see specialists for diagnosis and treatment. By empowering GPs to take on this role, the initiative anticipates reducing these delays and streamlining care. This measure is particularly important given the rising rates of ADHD diagnoses, which have increasingly burdened mental health services.
Ryan Park, the New South Wales Health Minister, emphasized the need for timely treatment options. He stated that increasing the number of practitioners who can diagnose and treat ADHD will lead to better outcomes for patients.
Dr. Rebekah Hoffman from the Royal Australian College of GPs supported the initiative, noting that it allows for more comprehensive care within the community. This change is expected to ease the pressure on mental health specialists, allowing them to focus on more complex cases.
The initiative has garnered support from parents and advocacy groups, including Neridah Armstrong, a mother of a child with ADHD. She highlighted how access to diagnosis and treatment through GPs can significantly improve the quality of life for families affected by ADHD.
Medications commonly prescribed for ADHD, such as Concerta, Vyvanse, and Ritalin, will also be available through GPs once they complete the training.
