On Sunday, approximately 300 residents gathered at Wausau West High School for the third annual Raise Your Voice Mental Health Awareness Walk/Run. This event aimed to foster community support and combat the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Haley Kerswill, an advisor for the school’s Raise Your Voice club, emphasized the importance of community gatherings for discussing mental health openly. She stated, “We want to encourage conversations about mental health and show that you are not alone. A walk run is a great way to engage the community.”
Cal Heiden, president of the Raise Your Voice club, praised the turnout, saying, “It’s impressive that so many people chose to dedicate their weekend to advocate for mental health and reduce stigma.”
Participants donned green attire to symbolize their support for mental health awareness. Student Erin Fehl remarked, “This shows that you are never alone, and many people care about you, even when you may not feel that way.”
Funds raised through admission fees and raffle baskets will benefit the Raise Your Voice clubs at D.C. Everest, Marathon, Wausau East, and Wausau West High Schools. Additionally, participants had the option to donate to NAMI Northwoods, a nonprofit that provides resources and support to those affected by mental illness.
Heiden pointed out the lack of mental health resources in smaller communities compared to larger cities, underscoring the importance of awareness efforts. Gavin Merriam, a member of the Wausau East Raise Your Voice club, highlighted the pressing need for mental health discussions, noting that nearly 50% of adolescents face mental health issues at some point.
Heiden encouraged kindness and appreciation as vital ways to support mental health advocacy. “You are not alone, no matter what. Resources are available in your community, at schools, and from friends and family. Help is always within reach.”
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the event served as a reminder of the importance of community support in addressing mental health challenges. For those needing assistance, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services offers resources, including a helpline at 988 and online support at 988lifeline.org.
