Lewis County hosts annual Mental Health Awareness Walk

Lewis County, New York, recently held its annual Mental Health Awareness Walk, an event dedicated to promoting mental health discussions and support within the community. This year marked the 19th iteration of the walk, which took place at the Lowville Fire Department despite rainy weather conditions. The event featured 17 resource booths from various county agencies, providing attendees with access to information and support services related to mental health.

In addition to the booths, participants enjoyed free food, face painting, and live music from the local band ‘Undefeated.’ A special ‘bubble release’ activity aimed to symbolize the dispersal of stigma surrounding mental health conversations.

Jamie Roberts, co-chair of the Mental Health Awareness Walk, emphasized the importance of breaking down stigma associated with mental health, particularly in smaller communities like Lewis County. ‘We hope to help break the stigma to promote mental health and that it is okay to talk about mental health,’ Roberts stated. ‘So that’s what we’re here for. We’re here to show awareness, and to come and celebrate as a community.’

The event attracted community members despite the rain, underscoring the commitment to mental health awareness in the region. Attendees were reminded of the availability of mental health services, including the state crisis lifeline number 988, which individuals can call in emergency situations. The successful turnout and community spirit at the walk reflect a strong local initiative to foster open discussions about mental health and provide support to those in need.
