May is designated as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to emphasize the importance of discussing mental health challenges that many individuals are currently facing. The past few years have been particularly tough, leading to elevated levels of stress that can result in serious mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Prolonged stress can also increase the risk of suicidal thoughts.
Stigma surrounding mental health often discourages individuals from seeking help. However, numerous resources are available for those in need of support. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is accessible 24/7 by calling or texting ‘988.’ This service offers free, confidential support, allowing individuals to speak directly with a trained counselor or to text for assistance if they prefer not to talk.
Local resources are also available. In the Great Bend area, individuals can contact the Center for Counseling and Consultation at their confidential crisis line, available 24/7, at 800-875-2544 or 620-792-2544. More information can be found on their website at https://thecentergb.org. In Hays, High Plains Mental Health offers support and can be reached at 785-628-2871 or their crisis line at 800-432-0333. Their website is https://hpmhc.com.
K-State Research and Extension provides additional resources through the Stress and Resiliency team, which is trained in various programs such as Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). They offer on-site programs and can be contacted via their website at https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/health/stress-management/trainings-programs.html or by email at rclews@ksu.edu, [email protected], or [email protected].
Kansas Agriculture Mediation Services can assist by connecting individuals with financial advisors, legal advice, and mental health facilities in their area. To reach out, call 800-321-3276.
It is essential to remain vigilant for friends and family members who may be struggling. If you notice signs of distress, do not hesitate to ask them how they are doing and encourage them to seek help. Additionally, incorporating daily coping strategies can aid in managing stress. Simple activities such as taking a walk, enjoying a massage, or practicing guided breathing exercises can be beneficial. Other suggestions include listening to music or spending a few minutes reflecting on positive aspects of life.
If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, reach out for help. Your community is here to support you.
