Study shows ketogenic therapy eliminates symptoms of PTSD, ADHD

A recent case report highlights the effectiveness of ketogenic metabolic therapy (KMT) in treating psychiatric comorbidities, specifically post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and binge-eating disorder (BED). This retrospective study involved a 38-year-old woman diagnosed with multiple mental health conditions, including PTSD, ADHD, BED, bipolar II disorder, depression, anxiety, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

The patient participated in an 8-week structured KMT psychoeducation program, which included weekly professional and peer support extending up to 24 weeks. The intervention aimed to address the overlapping symptoms and metabolic dysfunctions associated with these psychiatric disorders. To evaluate the effectiveness of KMT, standardized assessments were conducted at baseline and at 4 and 12 weeks, utilizing instruments such as the PHQ-9, GAD-7, DASS-21, PCL-5, BES, and CRAVED scales. Additionally, daily biometric data, including blood glucose and ketone levels, were recorded.

At the start of the program, the patient exhibited severe psychiatric symptoms, with maximal scores for PTSD and severe binge-eating behaviors. By week 12, all psychiatric symptoms resolved, with quantitative assessments showing reductions to zero across all validated instruments. The patient reported optimal symptom management when her blood ketone levels remained between 3 and 5 mmol/L.

Furthermore, qualitative feedback indicated significant improvements in her daily functioning, including enhanced occupational engagement and social interactions. This case report suggests that KMT may lead to complete remission of severe, treatment-resistant psychiatric comorbidities.

The findings underline the importance of further controlled clinical trials to confirm optimal therapeutic ketone ranges and to assess the applicability of KMT across diverse clinical populations facing similar challenges in mental health.
