Miles Jeffrey Roberts Foundation empowers student-athletes’ mental health

The Miles Jeffrey Roberts Foundation is actively supporting mental health initiatives for student-athletes in Ann Arbor, Michigan, following the tragic loss of 15-year-old Miles Jeffrey Roberts to suicide in 2017. Co-founders Kristen and Jeffrey Roberts established the foundation to create resources that address mental health challenges faced by youth, especially in sports environments.

Kristen Roberts, the foundation’s president, has a background in nursing and health education. She aims to foster a supportive community for young individuals struggling with their mental well-being. Similarly, Jeffrey Roberts, the foundation’s COO with a background in environmental engineering, emphasizes the importance of self-care and emotional health, particularly for young men who often feel pressured to suppress their feelings.

In 2019, the foundation launched programs aimed at empowering student-athletes with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate their mental health challenges. This initiative recognizes that the demands of athletics can exacerbate stress and anxiety, making mental health support essential for this demographic.

The foundation’s approach includes workshops for student-athletes that shift the focus from sports techniques to mental wellness. These sessions encourage athletes to discuss their feelings and seek help when needed, breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health in competitive environments. Feedback from coaches and parents indicates that these conversations have led to more open discussions about mental well-being among students.

Additionally, the foundation offers scholarships to graduating seniors at Skyline and Pioneer High Schools. Students are invited to write essays about their experiences with mental health, either personally or through helping others. The foundation awards two $2,500 scholarships at each school based on the essays submitted. The deadline for applications is May 15, with the possibility of extension if necessary.

Looking ahead, the Miles Jeffrey Roberts Foundation plans to expand its programs to Huron High School in the fall and aims to reach all Ann Arbor Public Schools by the 2025-2026 school year. The Roberts family believes this expansion will significantly impact more students across Washtenaw County, addressing mental health concerns within the youth population.

Through these efforts, the foundation honors Miles’ memory while striving to prevent similar tragedies by fostering a culture of openness and support among young athletes. The Roberts family hopes that by sharing their experience and advocating for mental health, they can inspire change and save lives.
