MOBYSS Celebrates 10 Years of Supporting Youth Mental Health

The Mobile Youth Walk-in Clinic (MOBYSS) is marking its 10th anniversary, providing essential mental health and medical services to youth across York Region and South Simcoe. Launched by the Canadian Mental Health Association-York Region & South Simcoe, MOBYSS focuses on youth aged 12 to 25, delivering care directly to schools and community events, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month.

MOBYSS operates at over 20 schools, creating a safe and welcoming environment where students can access support without judgment. The services are free, confidential, and do not require a health card or parental consent. Kristin Fawcett, Program Manager for CMHA York Region South Simcoe Youth Programs, explains, “If students are struggling, we are here to help. Thanks to our partnership with local school boards, guidance counselors can refer students to us directly.”

Since its inception, MOBYSS has become a vital resource for youth facing various challenges, including severe depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Many young people come to the clinic grappling with family issues or the threat of homelessness. Fawcett notes, “With rising rates of youth homelessness, we see many teens worried about their living situations.”

The clinic also addresses issues stemming from social media pressures that contribute to feelings of isolation and hopelessness. Some youths arrive with experiences of exploitation or victimization, including those affected by human trafficking. MOBYSS staff are trained to listen compassionately and connect these individuals with specialized mental health services and safe shelters.

The walk-in structure of MOBYSS allows students to choose when to seek help. This flexibility has proven effective, enabling youth to discuss their concerns in a familiar setting. Fawcett highlights that many students return to express gratitude for the support they’ve received. “They often thank us for referrals and share how our services have positively impacted their lives,” she says. For some, MOBYSS has been a crucial first step toward recovery.

To commemorate a decade of service, MOBYSS plans to distribute gift bags at schools and encourage students to write positive messages on a board inside the clinic. This celebration is also a call for community support, as MOBYSS relies entirely on donations. The clinic has set a fundraising goal of $10,000—$1,000 for each year of providing care. Every contribution helps maintain the mobile clinic’s operations, ensuring it continues to reach youth in need.

For more information on making a donation or to learn about MOBYSS, individuals can contact the clinic directly or visit their website.
