Springfield hosts youth mental health fair on June 6

Springfield Rise and Thrive, a local initiative led by residents and youth, is set to host ‘Be Kind to Your Mind,’ a free mental health and wellness fair for middle and high school students on June 6 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Samuel Bolden Park on Wilbraham Avenue. The event aims to promote mental health awareness and provide support for young people in Springfield.

The fair will begin with welcome remarks from Springfield Mayor Dominic Sarno, state Rep. Carlos Gonzalez, state Sen. Adam Gomez, and a representative from state Rep. Orlando Ramos’s office. Following the opening, attendees can enjoy a variety of activities created by local youth, including spoken word poetry, drum and dance performances, inspirational speakers, basketball, live mural painting, line dancing, food, games, and raffle prizes.

Beatrice Dewberry, Community Building and Engagement director at Way Finders, emphasized the importance of youth involvement, stating, ‘Springfield residents — especially our youth — are steering this ship. We are proud to support their efforts to create an event that represents their needs and interests.’ The fair aims to foster dialogue about mental health, reduce stigma around seeking help, and provide educational resources in an engaging atmosphere.

A key feature of the event is the unveiling of the Youth Mental Health Pledge, which includes commitments such as prioritizing personal feelings and needs and reaching out for help when necessary. This pledge was developed by the youth steering committee to encourage positive mental health practices among peers.

In addition, representatives from over a dozen local support agencies will be present to provide information and services to attendees. The event is a collaborative effort involving Way Finders, the New North Citizens Council, the Springfield Youth Mental Health Coalition, and NeighborWorks America.

This fair marks an important step in addressing youth mental health needs within the Springfield community, fostering a supportive environment where young people can engage with resources and each other.
