VGADA, I Choose Life Foundation Launch Youth Helpline in Abuja

The Vanguard Against Drug Abuse (VGADA), in partnership with the I Choose Life Foundation, has launched a 24-hour toll-free helpline to support youth mental health and combat substance abuse in Nigeria. The helpline numbers are 018884575, 02018884575, and WhatsApp: 07047114738. This initiative, part of the ‘Yo! Health Initiative,’ aims to provide immediate assistance to young people facing mental health challenges and issues related to drug use.

During the launch event in Abuja, Dr. Hope Omeiza, Executive Director and Founder of VGADA, emphasized the importance of this helpline as a safe space for young Nigerians. He stated that it will connect users to certified counselors and therapists who can offer psychosocial support and referrals when necessary. The helpline operates 24/7 and is available at no cost.

Omeiza noted, ‘This helpline is more than just a number; it is a support system for those silently struggling with mental health issues. We want to ensure that no young person has to face their challenges alone.’

The collaboration with the I Choose Life Foundation is intended to address the pressing need for mental health services and to reduce the stigma surrounding these issues. Ms. Sadiq Olive, representing the I Choose Life Foundation, highlighted the transformative nature of the helpline, stating, ‘Many young Nigerians find it difficult to talk about their mental health struggles. This helpline provides a judgment-free platform for immediate support.’

Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development, praised the initiative as a timely response to the mental health crisis among the youth. He affirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the Yo! Health Initiative and improving frameworks for youth mental well-being.

The launch included a demonstration of the helpline’s functionality and an interactive panel discussion featuring youth advocates and mental health professionals. Panelists urged stakeholders, including schools and community leaders, to prioritize mental health in youth programs.

This helpline is expected to be a crucial resource in addressing the mental health needs of young Nigerians, providing immediate help and fostering a more supportive environment for those in distress.
