A recent BankRate survey reveals that nearly 50% of adults in the United States believe that financial issues harm their mental health. As prices rise and savings dwindle, many individuals experience increased stress and anxiety related to their economic situations.

In Kansas City, residents are sharing their experiences with the mental strain of financial uncertainty. Courtney Holl, a mother of two, expressed her anxiety about her family’s future. “You almost feel the weight of the world on your shoulders,” she said, highlighting the daily struggle of making ends meet. To cope, her family has taken on extra work but maintaining a positive outlook remains a challenge for her. “I try to be as positive as possible, be thankful I have a job when people don’t, and keep looking for any way we can move forward,” she explained.

Experts emphasize that financial stress is a significant factor affecting mental well-being, especially in today’s unpredictable economy. Sara Schlagel, Senior Vice President of Children’s Mercy + Camber Mental Health in Olathe, noted that the fear of not knowing how to afford basic needs can be debilitating. “The uncertainty of where your next meal might come from or how to pay bills can create overwhelming anxiety,” she stated.

To combat these feelings, Schlagel offers practical advice for managing stress. She suggests starting each day by writing down three or more things for which individuals are grateful. This practice can help shift focus from financial worries to positive aspects of life. “If you are having a hard afternoon, remind yourself of those things you found helpful in the morning,” she advised.

In addition to gratitude journaling, Schlagel recommends activities such as journaling, spending time in nature, and practicing yoga as effective methods to regulate emotions. She also stresses the importance of fulfilling basic needs like sleep, nutrition, and exercise, which can enhance overall well-being. Maintaining strong social connections is equally important, as many people share similar struggles, and discussing these issues can provide relief.

“We find comfort in knowing we are not alone in this,” Schlagel said. “Many of us, even if we don’t admit it, are facing similar challenges. I encourage everyone to talk about it.”
