Oklahoma therapist shares tips to manage storm anxiety

As Oklahoma enters its storm season, many residents experience heightened anxiety due to severe weather conditions. Therapist Kyann Mitchner from Sunbeam Family Services explains that events like storms can trigger increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, leading to heightened feelings of anxiety.

To help manage this stress, Mitchner emphasizes the importance of preparation. “Get your storm shelter stocked and ready to go. Make sure it’s clean. If you don’t have a storm shelter, establish a safe space in your home for when severe weather hits,” she advises. Being prepared beforehand can reduce worry when storms approach.

In addition to physical preparedness, mental strategies can also alleviate anxiety. Mitchner recommends practicing deep breathing exercises to promote calmness. If deep breathing isn’t effective for you, she suggests trying radical acceptance—recognizing that while the situation may be uncomfortable, it is temporary. “Remember, the storm will not last forever,” she reassures.

Mitchner also highlights the importance of having a calming routine in place for after the storm passes. This could involve engaging in activities that help you relax and re-center, especially when planning your next steps.

Regular exercise and limiting caffeine intake are additional strategies that can benefit those experiencing storm-related anxiety. These practices can contribute to overall mental well-being and better stress management.
