Monaural Beats in Music Reduce Anxiety, Boost Mood in Study

A recent study published in Frontiers in Psychology highlights the effectiveness of monaural beats in reducing anxiety and improving mood among non-clinical participants. The research, involving 308 individuals, examined how auditory beat stimulation in the delta-theta frequency range (0-7 Hz) affects mental well-being.

Participants were divided into three groups, each subjected to a 30-minute listening session under different conditions: first, a combination of monaural beats and music; second, monaural beats alone; and third, a control group listening to pure tones. To assess psychological outcomes, researchers measured changes in self-reported anxiety and mood using established scales.

Findings revealed that only the group listening to both monaural beats and music experienced a substantial reduction in anxiety—showing a medium effect size of 0.58 with a p-value of less than 0.001. Additionally, this group reported a significant increase in emotional valence, indicating an uplift in mood, with an effect size of 0.48 and a p-value also below 0.001.

Conversely, the group exposed solely to monaural beats exhibited a minor decrease in energy levels, with an effect size of -0.28 and a p-value of less than 0.05, suggesting that the beats alone may not have the same beneficial effects on mood as when they are combined with music.

These results indicate that integrating monaural beats into musical compositions can serve as an effective non-invasive method to enhance emotional well-being and alleviate anxiety. This approach may offer a valuable tool for auditory neuromodulation, potentially aiding those seeking relief from stress in everyday settings. As mental health continues to be a priority for many, research like this emphasizes innovative, accessible methods for improving psychological health.
