Arsenal Tech High School launches mental health support program

Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis has implemented a new program that offers mental health services aimed at increasing student attendance. This initiative includes the establishment of two designated ‘Reset Rooms’ where students can discuss personal challenges and decompress.

Phil Edwards, the chief engagement officer at Shepherd Community Center, which collaborates with Arsenal Tech, emphasized the importance of these spaces. ‘We create an environment where students can talk about what they’re experiencing and receive the support they need for their mental health,’ he stated.

The program targets students facing attendance or disciplinary issues, as well as the growing number of Haitian students in the district. Currently, the program serves around 60 students, providing daily access to counselors and mental health resources.

Candace Robinson, an academic adviser at Arsenal Tech, noted that attendance issues often stem from students dealing with adult responsibilities. ‘Many students have to support themselves, so while education is important, they also need to meet basic needs like food and shelter,’ she explained. The program connects students with community resources to help them balance these challenges.

Since the program’s launch, both attendance and academic performance have improved. Robinson reported positive trends in student engagement and grades, stating, ‘Creating a safe space where students feel heard has had a measurable impact.’

The Reset Rooms are open every day, providing a consistent resource for students needing support. Edwards hopes to expand the program further, increasing its reach to help more students navigate their challenges effectively.

For those interested in supporting this initiative, Arsenal Tech High School and Shepherd Community Center welcome community involvement.
