New Hampshire launches Blue Envelope Program for drivers with autism and PTSD

A new initiative in New Hampshire aims to assist drivers with autism and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by introducing the Blue Envelope Program. Starting January 1, 2024, drivers can obtain a blue envelope from any New Hampshire Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. This envelope is intended to hold important documents such as the driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance information.

The initiative is designed to alert law enforcement officers that the driver may experience increased stress during interactions with police. By having this envelope visible, officers can recognize the potential for heightened anxiety and adjust their communication approach accordingly.

Similar programs already exist in Vermont and various communities in New York, where they aim to foster understanding and compassion during traffic stops. The Blue Envelope Program represents a proactive step by New Hampshire to promote safety and support for individuals with autism and PTSD, aiming to reduce anxiety during law enforcement encounters.

As the program rolls out, New Hampshire officials emphasize the importance of inclusivity and awareness in public safety practices. The initiative not only provides tangible support for affected drivers but also encourages law enforcement to approach situations with greater sensitivity. This program reflects a growing recognition of the need for tailored responses to the diverse needs of individuals on the road.
