Montgomery County’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will host a public forum focused on effective communication strategies regarding mental health and substance use on Saturday, May 17, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Montgomery College’s East County Education Center in Silver Spring.
This event aims to equip community members with practical tools to facilitate discussions about mental health and substance use. Attendees will have access to local resources and learn how to support loved ones through prevention, crisis, and recovery efforts.
County Executive Marc Elrich emphasized the importance of open dialogue, stating, “Talking about mental health and substance use isn’t always easy, but it’s important. When people know how to have those conversations and where to find help, they can better support themselves and others. I encourage everyone to join this event and be part of a healthier, more connected Montgomery County.”
The forum will feature several breakout sessions, beginning at 9 a.m. Topics include: – Narcan training and distribution, aimed at equipping individuals with the skills to respond to opioid overdoses. – Information on accessing mental health and substance use resources, including guidance on how to use the 988 Crisis Line. – Strategies for setting and maintaining healthy boundaries in relationships.
Additionally, a resource fair will take place throughout the event, showcasing local organizations dedicated to mental health and substance use. Students attending the entire forum can earn up to 3.5 Student Service Learning hours, provided they submit a consent form along with their student ID, grade, and school name for verification.
The forum is organized by DHHS’s Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction Advisory Council, Mental Health Advisory Council, and Montgomery County Youth Ambassadors. A light breakfast will be served, and attendees are encouraged to register in advance. To register and for accessibility accommodations, including interpretation services, participants should contact Diane Lininger via email by May 5.
