Vic Martin advocates for veterans' mental health support

Vic Martin, a Navy veteran and current commander of American Legion Post 275 in La Jolla, California, dedicates his efforts to supporting veterans experiencing mental health crises. With a background as a mineman specializing in underwater explosives, Martin faced significant challenges after being medically retired in 2012 due to a brain injury. Upon returning home, he grappled with feelings of guilt and confusion regarding his mental health diagnosis, which included severe anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, PTSD, and panic disorder.

In a candid discussion on the American Legion’s Tango Alpha Lima podcast, Martin shared his journey through these struggles, emphasizing the isolation many veterans feel. Nine months into his transition, he faced suicidal thoughts, driven by the impact of his condition on his family. “I saw the pain I was giving my family,” Martin recalled, describing moments of distress when he would react unpredictably, causing concern for his daughters.

Recognizing the critical need for mental health resources, Martin became an advocate for The American Legion’s Be the One mission, which connects veterans with essential services. He hosts events at his American Legion post aimed at increasing awareness and access to these resources, particularly in San Diego, where he resides.

Now serving as the American Legion California District 22 commander and the 2nd Vice President of the San Diego Veterans Coalition, Martin also holds the position of National Director of Community Engagement for Solara Mental Health, a treatment center focusing on veterans’ mental health and substance use disorders. Martin’s advocacy is rooted in his personal experience, driving his commitment to ensuring veterans do not feel alone in their struggles.

Additionally, the podcast episode features discussions on military nicknames, upcoming American Legion Family Day events, and the inclusion of military members with autism as part of World Autism Awareness Month.
