Lifeline Productions explores mental health through theater

Lifeline Productions is tackling mental health issues through theater, highlighting the courage of performers who share their personal struggles with an audience. Their recent show, ‘Entangled,’ features Will Luera, who reflects on his life experiences and how they shaped his mental health challenges.

Luera, an actor and improv artist, wrote, directed, and stars in ‘Entangled,’ which runs for about 75 minutes. The performance, subtitled ‘controlled chaos and the voice in my head,’ delves into his major and minor traumas, illustrating how they contributed to his mental health conditions. He portrays his inner struggles through a character named Bill, played by Andrew Deeb, who embodies his chaotic thoughts and serves as a comedic counterpart throughout the show.

Growing up in a Latino family in Chicago, Luera faced cultural stigmas around mental health, where seeking help was often seen as a weakness. This backdrop influenced his reluctance to discuss his feelings and experiences. He recounts pivotal moments from his childhood, including his parents’ divorce and the emotional toll of his father’s imprisonment, which left him feeling isolated and undervalued.

As an adult, Luera pursued theater in Boston, where he initially felt unwelcome. His career as a performer progressed, but he faced the emotional aftermath of losing friends and relatives to suicide, which exacerbated his mental health issues, leading to conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and complex PTSD. To cope, he became highly organized, engaging in compulsive behaviors like chewing his fingers and overcommitting to various projects to avoid confronting his pain.

In ‘Entangled,’ Luera presents his story with a blend of earnestness and humor, aiming for a casual and relatable style. While he navigates the emotional weight of his narrative, Deeb’s energetic portrayal of Bill often steals the spotlight, offering comic relief and a dynamic interaction that keeps the audience engaged.

Following each performance, audience members participate in a talkback session, where they can share their own experiences and connect with the themes presented. This element fosters a supportive environment, allowing attendees to reflect on their own mental health journeys.

‘Entangled’ is not just a performance; it is an exploration of personal truths that resonate with many. Luera’s willingness to expose his vulnerabilities encourages others to confront their own struggles and seek help. The production runs through May 25 at the Cook Theatre in Sarasota, with tickets priced at $30. For more information, visit lifelinproductionsinc.org/entangled-tickets.
