A recent study suggests that weight loss medications, including Ozempic, may improve mental health by alleviating symptoms of depression. Researchers at the University of Bern in Switzerland analyzed data from 36 studies involving 26,000 participants. The findings revealed that individuals receiving these injections experienced notable enhancements in emotional wellbeing.

The study highlighted that drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have positive effects on mental health conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. These findings were presented at the European Congress on Obesity. Importantly, the research found no evidence linking these medications to new mental health issues or thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Dr. Sigrid Breit, the study’s lead author, indicated that these medications positively influence mental states and overall quality of life. Low-grade inflammation in the brain has been associated with various mental health disorders, and the anti-inflammatory properties of these drugs may contribute to their beneficial effects. Dr. Breit noted, ‘They may have antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects due to their anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation in the brain.’

The study’s implications are particularly significant for individuals with severe mental disorders, who are three times more likely to struggle with obesity compared to the general population. Dr. Breit emphasized the need for future research to explore the potential use of these medications in treating mental health disorders directly.

Dr. Ed Beveridge from the Royal College of Psychiatrists acknowledged that many individuals with mental illness also face challenges with weight management. He stressed the importance of prioritizing access to these medications for this vulnerable group when appropriate. This study opens a pathway for further exploration into how weight loss drugs can support mental health in addition to their primary purpose of aiding weight management.
