Social media platforms have become important venues for discussions surrounding mental health, particularly for conditions like attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. A recent study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research examined trends in conversations about ADHD and autism on Reddit from 2012 to 2022. This analysis highlights how the public’s understanding of these conditions has evolved, especially in the context of rising advocacy for neurodiversity.
The study’s objective was to explore the changing relationship between ADHD and autism in online discussions. Researchers focused on mentions of ADHD in the subreddit r/autism and autism in r/ADHD, comparing these trends to discussions of other mental health conditions. They also looked at user overlap between the two subreddits to observe how discussions were shared across these communities.
Key findings revealed a notable increase in the mention of autism within r/ADHD posts starting in 2021. Posts referencing autism surpassed mentions of other conditions like bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), making autism the most frequently discussed diagnosis in that subreddit. Conversely, mentions of ADHD in r/autism also increased steadily over the years, while discussions of OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and bipolar disorder remained constant and low.
User overlap between the two subreddits grew significantly beginning in 2020, indicating a trend toward shared conversations about ADHD and autism. The semantic analysis conducted using Word2Vec models showed a trend of increasing similarity between the two conditions from 2019 onward, suggesting a shift in how these disorders are perceived in public discourse.
Topic modeling using BERT-based methods revealed that discussions in both subreddits increasingly focused on common themes. These included the experiences of adults with ADHD and autism, challenges in obtaining diagnoses, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. This convergence in topics highlights a growing recognition of the similarities and shared experiences between individuals with ADHD and autism.
The study emphasizes the dynamic nature of public understanding regarding ADHD and autism, which seems to be diverging from traditional diagnostic frameworks. As interest in mental health continues to rise, it is crucial to investigate how social media influences perceptions and discussions surrounding these conditions. Future research should further explore these evolving narratives, especially given their implications for psychiatric practice and advocacy efforts in the neurodiversity movement.
