FSU Law focuses on mental health support for students

Florida State University College of Law is prioritizing mental health in legal education, led by Professor Lawrence Krieger. With over 30 years of experience, Krieger emphasizes the need for students to manage stress effectively, especially during high-pressure periods like finals week. Research indicates that 75% of law students face considerable stress and anxiety, which can lead to severe mental health issues.

Krieger states, ‘While grades and prestige are important, we must also recognize the value of joy and fulfillment in our students’ lives.’ His approach includes not only academic support but also mental health resources tailored for law students.

Erin O’Hara O’Connor, dean of FSU College of Law, highlights the institution’s commitment to equipping students with both academic tools and mental health support. ‘True success in the legal profession requires more than just academic excellence; it requires well-being,’ she says.

Krieger’s contributions extend beyond traditional teaching. Together with Rev. Theresa Krieger, he co-teaches a course called ‘Transformational Leadership for Lawyers,’ which focuses on reducing stress and developing competencies outlined by the National Task Force on the Future of the Legal Profession.

In addition to this coursework, Krieger mentors students and alumni, offering weekly meditation and movement sessions designed to help students relax and recharge.

FSU Law has integrated wellness practices into its curriculum and provides a variety of mental health resources starting from students’ first days. Dean O’Connor acknowledges Krieger’s essential role in these wellness initiatives, which include ‘Wellness Wednesdays,’ guest speaker events, a fall Wellness Fair, and access to a part-time mental health clinician. The college also offers financial wellness programming to support students’ overall health and success.

These initiatives reflect a broader recognition of the mental health challenges faced by law students, with FSU Law leading the way in creating a supportive educational environment.
