Jonny Wilkinson promotes mental health during awareness week

Rugby union icon Jonny Wilkinson visited Surrey as part of a campaign aimed at enhancing mental health awareness. His appearance at the University of Surrey’s sports ground coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week, which begins on Monday.

Since retiring from professional rugby in 2014, Wilkinson has candidly discussed the challenges he faced in adjusting to life after sports. In 2023, he revealed that he struggled with self-doubt during his playing career, particularly leading up to his famous last-minute drop-goal that secured England’s World Cup victory in 2003.

Wilkinson actively engages in conversations about mental health and collaborates with Milk & More, a local milk delivery service. Together, they are promoting a series of daily wellbeing routines that Milk & More’s delivery personnel will share with customers. This initiative seeks to create a supportive community environment encouraging positive mental health practices.

Wilkinson’s efforts reflect a growing awareness of mental health issues, particularly in high-pressure professions like professional sports. By leveraging his platform, he aims to inspire others to prioritize their mental wellbeing and seek help when needed. His work emphasizes the importance of community support in tackling mental health challenges effectively.
