In a recent interview for the ‘Keep the Conversation Going’ series by the Mortgage Industry Mental Health Charter (MIMHC), Paul Purewal, corporate account manager at Coventry Building Society, discussed the positive effects of exercise and teamwork on mental health with Jason Berry, group sales director of Crystal Specialist Finance.
Purewal pointed out that engaging in team sports cultivates essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and resilience. He explained, ‘Sports teach you to handle both success and failure, understand the value of mentorship, and continuously work on self-improvement.’ These lessons translate effectively into workplace dynamics, fostering a supportive and productive environment.
Moreover, Purewal highlighted the mental health benefits associated with regular physical activity. He stated, ‘I am a runner, but I also find great value in simply taking a walk. Since the pandemic, many have recognized how a walk can positively impact your mindset.’ This shift in perception emphasizes the importance of accessible forms of exercise for mental wellbeing.
In discussing the relationship between alcohol consumption and mental health, Purewal shared a personal family experience. He recounted how his father, an immigrant from India in the 1970s, faced challenges in expressing emotions in a new environment. For him and many others, socializing at pubs became a primary outlet. Although moderate drinking can be part of social life, Purewal warned against relying on alcohol as a primary means of relaxation.
He reflected, ‘My dad battled alcoholism, and some family members have lost their lives due to it. I enjoy a beer, but I consciously avoid peer pressure and understand the importance of choosing the right moments for drinking.’
The MIMHC aims to provide resources for organizations to promote mental wellbeing in the workplace. An upcoming event, the MIMHC Charity Ball at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London on October 10, 2025, will be the industry’s first alcohol-free gathering, reinforcing the message of responsible drinking.
