The Child Mind Institute is organizing a virtual panel discussion in May to explore findings from a recent study focused on mental health support for Black families and youth. This initiative, in collaboration with The Steve Fund, aims to address current challenges in accessing quality mental health care within the Black community.
The study, supported by the Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children’s Mental Health, includes a thorough literature review and a nationally representative survey. It reveals a notable change in attitudes toward mental health among Black individuals, but it also uncovers significant barriers to accessing effective care. Key findings indicate that many Black families face obstacles in receiving adequate mental health services, which can hinder the overall well-being of children and young adults.
During the panel discussion, mental health experts will examine various aspects highlighted by the study. They will discuss: – Changes in perceptions of mental health within the Black community – Differences in stigma experienced by parents compared to young adults – Challenges in accessing quality mental healthcare – Skepticism surrounding medication as a treatment option – Effective intervention and prevention strategies
Participants in the event can earn continuing medical education credits for psychiatrists and continuing education credits for psychologists and social workers. The panel will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 14. Registration is currently open for those interested in attending this important discussion.
