Orlando hosts 4th Annual Day of H.O.P.E. for youth mental health

On May 15, the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida will host the 4th Annual Day of H.O.P.E. and Positive Influence Block Party from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Levy-Hughes Clubhouse. This free community celebration aims to promote youth mental health by providing education, empowerment, and entertainment to local young people.

The event, organized by the Boys & Girls Club and the University of Central Florida (UCF), focuses on the needs and voices of young men in the Paramore neighborhood. Dr. Trenton Marsh, an assistant professor at UCF, described H.O.P.E. as an acronym for Healing Oasis for Peace and Empowerment. Weekly, the H.O.P.E. Circle meets to engage young men, allowing them to voice their concerns and aspirations for their community.

The partnership between UCF and the Boys & Girls Club emerged from the community’s needs, particularly in addressing issues of bullying and trauma. Tasha Robinson, the Senior Service Director at the Boys & Girls Club, emphasized the importance of supporting grieving youth, especially in light of recent tragedies related to gun violence. This event serves as a response to those challenges, offering a platform for young people to channel their grief into positive action.

The Day of H.O.P.E. will focus this year on the ‘5Cs’: communication, confidence, compassion for others, stepping outside comfort zones, and becoming coachable. Young attendees will have the opportunity to learn and develop skills that empower them to become positive influences in their community.

The event will feature remarks from esteemed guests, including Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith, as well as testimonials from youth participants who will share their experiences with the H.O.P.E. Circle. Additionally, attendees can earn a micro-credential recognizing them as civic community champions.

Participants can enjoy free food, interactive activities, live performances, and connect with like-minded community organizations. Those interested in attending must register through Eventbrite, although the event is free to all.

This initiative not only aims to address the mental health challenges faced by young people but also fosters a sense of belonging and community engagement among participants. With a focus on building resilience and encouraging proactive involvement, the Day of H.O.P.E. continues to be a vital resource for youth in Orlando.
