Odisha Deputy CM Implements Mental Health Education in Schools

In a significant announcement, the Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Prabhati Parida, revealed that mental health education will be integrated into school curricula. This initiative aims to combat a troubling trend: one in every ten individuals in the region is affected by suicide, with the majority of victims being teenagers aged 15 to 30. This demographic represents 90% of suicide cases, highlighting an urgent need for intervention.

Recent statistics show a sharp increase in student suicides, rising by 52% over the past three years. In 2021, 5,649 students took their lives, followed by 6,140 in 2022, and 5,989 in 2023. The World Health Organization reports that 16.5% of young people in the country have attempted suicide, with alarming rates of one life lost every hour. Key factors contributing to these tragedies include academic pressure, family conflicts, romantic issues, and substance abuse.

Parida noted that the emotional toll of reprimands from parents and mistreatment by teachers exacerbates the issue. In response, the government had previously designated schools as ‘punishment-free zones,’ but the effectiveness of this policy remains uncertain.

The Chief Minister has expressed concern over the rising suicide rates among students, prompting the government to take action. As part of the initiative, a psychological training center will be established, offering not only lessons in mental health but also sports and psychological training to foster resilience among students.

Psychologist Dr. Prashant Mohapatra emphasized the impact of societal pressures, including the comparative attitudes of parents, which can adversely affect students’ mental health. He noted that female students are more likely to commit suicide, often due to mental distress linked to their menstrual cycles.

The government’s proactive measures aim to address these alarming trends and support the mental well-being of students, recognizing that they are the future of the nation. This initiative marks a crucial step towards creating a supportive and informed educational environment that prioritizes mental health.
