Perennial UK emphasizes the importance of discussing mental wellbeing within the horticulture industry. Working in this field can be mentally and physically taxing, and recent economic uncertainties are exacerbating these challenges. Rising costs, job insecurity, and extended healthcare wait times are testing individuals’ ability to cope with daily life, negatively affecting their mental health.

A forthcoming report from Perennial, the Wellbeing Research Report 2025, reveals that nearly 83% of horticulture workers scored low or average in wellbeing assessments. This statistic highlights a pressing need for open discussions about mental health among florists, garden center employees, nursery staff, gardeners, greenkeepers, and landscapers, whether they are employed or self-employed.

To foster a supportive workplace environment, Perennial encourages both employees and employers to engage in conversations about mental wellbeing. The organization has developed several free resources to assist in this effort:

1. **Free Mental Wellbeing Webinars**: In collaboration with Mental Health First Aid England, Perennial offers two webinar sessions from May to November 2025. The first session, aimed at managers, supervisors, and team leaders, focuses on fostering confident conversations about mental health. The second session targets HR professionals and business owners, addressing the need for Mental Health First Aiders in workplaces.

2. **Mental Wellbeing Resource Pack**: This pack contains tools and services designed to help individuals manage life’s challenges that impact mental health. It can be downloaded and shared within organizations to promote mental health awareness.

3. **Access to Perennial’s Mental Health First Aid Ambassador Network**: This network connects trained Mental Health First Aiders in the horticulture sector, allowing them to meet quarterly to exchange ideas and best practices.

Clare Downs, Head of Preventative Services at Perennial, stated, “The horticulture industry is wonderful, but it does have its challenges. We need to support each other in our workplaces to ensure that everyone can access the advice and support they need for positive mental wellbeing.”

To promote mental health awareness in the workplace, Perennial encourages organizations to take action immediately. Interested parties can book a spot in one of the free webinars and explore the available resources by visiting perennial.org.uk/workplace-wellbeing. Engaging in these conversations can lead to improved mental health support and a more resilient horticulture workforce.
